ARTIST STATEMENT

Tropical Current is inspired by the bioluminescence seen at night when a wonderous bright blue glow occurs in warm tropical waters produced by billions of single-celled algae called Noctiluca Scintillans, commonly known as “sea sparkle”.
This harmless microscopic plankton floats just under the surface of the water and produces a chemical called luciferin which emits blue light.
This light show is activated if threatened by predators or disturbed by currents and winds.
I chose a palette of liquid paint blues to produce a greenish tinge when mixed, and white paint to create the patterns of the current.
Using a restrained palette of blue, green, white and black that creates a dramatic and beautiful sense of movement.
The close-up views show the gradations in the paint produced by different additives to get the desired effect.
Like the phenomena itself, this painting looks dramatic when lit at night.
The painting is on a smooth artist-quality canvas with a fluid painting technique style.
This unique artwork cannot be replicated. It is created using various methods to control flow, connections between colours, and layering to reveal underlying colours and bring depth to the painting.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work is inspired by colours, forms, and textures in the landscape that I see in aerial images; and from my experiences on the ground, ‘going bush’’ camping and exploring alpine rivers, outback deserts and rugged coastlines in remote regions of Australia.

I use acrylic paints in various forms from highly textured to liquid; and some artwork is further developed digitally as a base for more painting or digital prints.

If you would like to see more of my work and painting process two sites to view are my studio page and see me on instagram

I hope you get the same sense of awe at our wonderous world as I do in the painting process.
